When the monitor is turned on
power flows into the power supply.
This converts the house current
into several voltages. Some of
this power goes to the electron
gun at the back of the picture
tube. The gun is always ready to
fire a stream of electrons at the
front of the picture tube. The
inside of the glass at the front
is coated with a chemical that
will glow if it is hit by
electrons. This coating of this
screen is similar to the coating
inside a fluorescent light.

To make the electrons hit the
screen hard and light it up, the
screen is given a strong positive
voltage by a transformer called the
flyback.

There is a wire between the
circuit board and the electron
gun that can turn it on and off
very quickly.

Around the back of the
picture tube are some coils of
wire called the yoke. When
electricity is flowed into the
yoke, it creates a magnetic
field that controls the
electron beam.

Without the yoke, the
electron beam would always hit
the center of the screen. All
you would ever see is a small
white dot. The yoke can deflect
the beam to hit any chosen
location on the screen.
